History of Los Ranchos :
The history of olive growing in Uruguay is tied with that of man. The European
migrants came with a tradition of taste in their luggage. Since they couldn’t carry
along a piece of their land, they planted olive trees from their regions, letting them
adapt to the soil and environment so particular to this country. Of these varieties
coming from Europe, Leccino, Taggiasca, Pendolino, Moraiolo, Frantoio, Manzanilla,
Arbequina, we can say today that they became largely indigenous, fitting surprisingly
well in a sometimes rough landscape, so much that even the armadillos have made it
their favorite habitat.
Today we continue to plant olive trees that were carefully selected in the best
nurseries of Italy and Spain. With always the same preoccupation in mind, which is to
make sure that the trees blend into what makes the identity of this country, a mix
between a peaceful Mediterranean type vegetation, and its sudden tropical explosions,
so that the olives are able to capture up to the most subtle aromas.
